Working in Malaysia

Call centers, sales (such as Google Ads), and YouTube video inspectors are available jobs for Koreans in Malaysia. Most companies in Malaysia are BPO companies so almost every job except for the HR and YouTube inspectors is CS related. TDCX is a relatively new one among BPO companies and for the Google project, there are sales and tag setup work. Salaries for tag work is 9300RM + incentive 500RM - Not sure if the salary is still the same (Worked there between 2022. 7. ~ 2023. 7.)

Company Pros and Cons

For tag work, the pros are
1. Work-life balance (by Korean standards): Nothing else other than taking care of the calls
2. Sick leave

Cons
1. No good for career development not just for a developer but in general (of course, it differs by person)
2. Job itself (stressful)
3. Too many unnecessary training and meaning less chores (Even compared to the Korean public service job as an ex-public worker)
4. Mosquitos

Locations

KL Sentral area (offices are dispersed here and there) - Not too far from the KL downtown, no pork as this area is halal, housing here is expensive which is part of the reason why most people commute from less expensive areas

Process

The joining process includes a basic English test, basic coding knowledge -> interview with the head hunger, and -> interview with the tag team (unsure if the head hunter interview was first).

Then, document and reference submission -> taking equipment and setup -> meaningless training for a month -> dealing with cases (calls)

Well, it is fair to say that this applies to every job but do not take what the head hunters and someone from the tag team are saying and only make decisions based on self-interest and plan (good for a year-ish trip to lighten thoughts)

Especially, it is mandatory to pay 30% taxes for 6 months. The good news is this money will be reimbursed but still, it is not easy to get by in the meantime. It is better to ask tax related matter to the person in charge directly.

Malaysia Pros and Cons

Pros
1. Don't care what you do
2. Most people are genuinely nice
3. Grap (Grap solves everything)
4. Pools (Most condo has pools)
5. Good to travel southeast area
6. Relatively good infrastructure

Cons
1. Food (too much oil and not tasty) - feels like all the oil makes me more cold-resistant
2. Pool value: average meals cost around 25 ~ 35RM no service water (at least the water is cheap due to rich water resource), quality does not go with price here
3. Narrow pedestrian path and too many people walking slowly shoulder to shoulder
4. Expensive

Cost of Living

For rent 2300RM (found a good deal near the office), electricity 230RM, Gas 25RM, water 6RM (per month but somehow the pay bill came every other month), sewage 60RM (once half year)

gas
water

The Malaysia socket looks like this

Would not recommend either the job nor living there
